Coaching Tip: Ask, Don't Tell

My favorite advice to share with others is centered around the art of asking great questions. When an employee isn't doing what you want or expect, resist telling them what to do. (We've all said, "but I TOLD them 3 times").

Instead Ask a Question. Asking questions engages the brain. Your employee won't tune out when they need to formulate a response. Asking is involving. Involving creates engagement. Aren't we all looking for engaged, committed team members?

❔ Hey, can you describe Y? It will help me see what you are doing and where the breakdown may be.

Ask for their understanding of the process. (Maybe you haven't explained it well enough, or you used generic terms such as "be on time". )

❔ Will you share the steps of the process you are using for X? Let's make sure you and I are on the same page.

Ask them to share ideas or opinions about how something is working, or how it could be improved, or what is getting in the way of success. (Maybe you will learn something and can then go do something about it)

❔ Would you tell me some things that are obstacles to achieving Z? I'd like to hear from your perspective what I need to be aware of.

What are some of your favorite questions to ensure that you Ask rather than Tell?
