Delegated… or Just Assigned?

Most leaders think they’ve delegated because they assigned the task.

Their team doesn’t feel ownership because only the work transferred, not the responsibility.

Here’s what actually needs to transfer for a handoff to hold:

  • The outcome — what does “done well” actually look like? Not the steps. The result. If your team member can’t describe the finish line in their own words, they’re guessing.

  • The decision rights — what can they decide without coming back to you? If the answer is “nothing,” you haven’t given them the work. You’ve given them the appearance of it.

  • The check-in cadence — when will you touch base, and what will you look at? Defined in advance. Not triggered by your anxiety.

Picture this: a leader delegates a project, then checks Slack every few hours, asks for updates, and quietly rewrites pieces before it goes out.

The team learns one lesson: “You’re still really responsible for this.”

If delegation keeps bouncing back to your desk, the issue usually isn’t effort — it’s accountability clarity. When those three things transfer, so does the ownership.
