Did Your Training Have an "After"?

Let’s make this personal but not about blame.

If your last training investment produced a great day and no lasting change, the likeliest reason isn’t your people and it isn’t even necessarily a bad consultant. It’s that the engagement was never designed to last. The good news: there are concrete signs you can check for.

Here are the warning signs that a program had no “after”:

1. It ended at the workshop — there was no follow-up structure and no manager involvement built in. The relationship, and the momentum, walked out the door when the trainer did.

2. Nothing measured the behavior — success was judged by the energy in the room and the feedback scores, not by what people were actually doing weeks later.

3. Results faded within weeks — and no one had a plan for that, because the real test of good training is what’s happening 90 days later, not the mood on the day.

If a few of those landed, the gap usually isn’t a bad consultant it’s a missing reinforcement layer. And a missing layer can be added.

A leader looks back at an expensive program and realizes it had no “after” — the relationship, and the momentum, ended when the trainer left.

When a reinforcement layer was added later, the same people finally produced the change the original program had promised.

The point of diagnosing this isn’t regret it’s clarity. Once you can see exactly where the “after” was missing, you know precisely what to build next time.
