When Clear isn't clear

Most leadership problems aren’t caused by a lack of effort, motivation, or talent.

They’re caused by something far more subtle — and far more damaging.

People think they’re aligned…
But they’re not actually talking about the same things.

Leaders say things like:

  • “We need to move faster.”

  • “Take ownership.”

  • “This is a priority.”

  • “Let’s be more strategic.”

Teams nod. Everyone agrees.

And then execution falls apart.

Not because people don’t care but because the expectations behind the words were never shared.

When language isn’t shared, expectations stay invisible

In many organizations, leadership language sounds clear on the surface. Underneath, everyone fills in the gaps differently based on their role, experience, and assumptions.

That’s when problems show up as:

  • Goals that feel unclear or constantly shifting

  • Roles and responsibilities that don’t quite line up

  • Missed handoffs, rework, and growing frustration

  • Leaders stepping in to fix things that “shouldn’t need fixing”

Read the full article to see why shared language is the missing link in leadership.

From the outside, it looks like a performance issue.
From the inside, it feels like chaos.

In reality, it’s a clarity issue.
