Clarity Changes the Game, Discipline Wins It
You’ve already explained it. The deadline. The expectation. The standard. You were clear. Everyone nodded. And then it happened again.
The same missed step. The same late deliverable. The same behavior. So you explained it again. Maybe more calmly. Maybe with more detail. Maybe trying to make it “land” better.
But here’s the shift:
Before alignment, leaders explain.
After alignment, leaders stop repeating themselves.
How do you know you've been clear?
This is the first check point. If you've explained but haven't checked for understanding, then it may be YOU that is the problem. Repeating yourself isn't always the solution.
Instead:
State your expectations or the process
Ask them to repeat the expectations or the process.
Listen
If they miss a step, that's the gap. Reteach, then have them "teach it back". If they repeat it correctly then you know that they know.
Accountability established.
Quick gut check:
Where are you repeating something you’ve already made clear?
When did you ask them to "teach" it back to you?
What did you learn?
Where are you hoping it improves instead of addressing it directly?
Pick one situation.
One person. One repeated issue.
Then:
Say the expectation. Confirm they understand it. Be clear about what happens if it doesn’t change.
Calm. Direct. Done.

Identify one area where you are over-explaining instead of checking for understanding.
One person.
One behavior.
One missed standard.
Then:

🤝 Ask for their understanding
